Reach out to your local representative regarding House Resolution 1843.
On March 11, 2021, Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced a bill that would facilitate a review of hate crimes committed against our Asian friends, family, and neighbors. House Resolution 1843 (H.R. 1843), “To facilitate the expedited review of COVID-19 hate crimes”, will allow the federal government to officially track hate crimes against Asians across the country. This is important because it will highlight how often these crimes occur and will support federal agencies to take targeted action against such violent acts.
This bill is currently being debated in the Judiciary committee. As of this writing, the bill has 94 Co-Sponsors, including 10 of the 13 members of Congress that represent various parts of New York City. The three representatives who have not are Jerry Nadler (NY-10, parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn), Jamaal Bowman (NY-16, northern Bronx and parts of Westchester), and Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11, Staten Island, and southern Brooklyn).
The Hope Justice Team is asking members of Hope Church Astoria and beyond to support this legislation by reaching out to their representatives if you live in the district of one of the four members of Congress mentioned above. Ask them to Co-Sponsor this bill. If you do not live in one of those districts, reach out to friends and family that do, and ask them to take action.
CALL
You may find the following script helpful when calling.
“Hi, my name is <your name> and I live in <your neighborhood>. I am calling because I see that the Congressman has not co-sponsored HR1843 to facilitate the expedited review of COVID-19 hate crimes and I would urge him to do so. This is a critical piece of legislation that will have a significant impact on the fight against anti-Asian crime. I expect him to support this bill, but co-sponsorship would give it more support and momentum towards passage. Thank you.”
** If you live in Nicole Malliotakis’ district, this would be more appropriate:
“Hi, my name is <your name> and I live in <your neighborhood>. I am calling to ask the Congresswoman to support HR1843 to facilitate the expedited review of COVID-19 hate crimes. This is a critical piece of legislation that will have a significant impact on the fight against anti-Asian crime. Though this will require the Congresswoman to cross party lines, I urge her to do so anyway. With the crisis of anti-Asian violence and crime across the country, we need all available resources to combat this. Thank you.”
